What is Power Bi area chart?
The Power Bi area chart is also known as layered area chart and it is based on the line chart.
The area chart in power bi is used to show the magnitude of change over time, and it can be used to draw attention to the total value across a trend.
There are two types of area chart present in the Power Bi:
- Area chart
- Stacked area chart

How to create a Power bi area chart?
Here we will see how to create Power bi area chart and power bi stacked area chart in Power bi desktop by using sample data.

- Open your Power bi desktop
- Select the Get Data from the ribbon -> Excel Sheet.
- Load the data to the Power bi desktop.
- Now navigate to the report in Power bi desktop
- From the visualization pane Select Area chart
- Then drag-drop order date(month) and profit from the field pane to Axis and value respectively.
- In the below screen-shot, you can see the basic area chart in power bi based on profit and sales by month.
- From the visualization select the Stacked area chart in the Power bi.
- Now you can see the Stacked area chart in the below screen-shot based on profit and sales by month.

Power bi area chart transparency
Here we will see how to create Power bi area chart transparency using the above sample data.
- In the Power bi report, select the area chart from the visualization.
- Then drag-drop order date(month) and profit from the field pane to Axis and value respectively.
- In the format section, go to the background color and select a background color.
- Then you can set the transparency of background color from 1 to 100 in the power bi area chart. Here we set the transparency is 12%.

Power bi area chart conditional formatting
Here we will see the power bi area chart conditional formatting by using the above sample data
First we will create visuals using Stacked column chart and then we will convert it to area chart.
- In the Power bi report, select the stacked column chart visualization
- Then drag-drop product category and sales from the field pane to Axis and value respectively.
- In the Format section, Turn on the Data label. Then select the Data colors and click on the conditional formatting(fx)
- In the Default color dialog box, under format by select color scale. Then under based on field, select Sales, and under summarization select Average.
- Under minimum, you can custom the value by selecting custom or select the Lowest value and set a color.
- In the same way, you can set the maximum value and set the color.
- If you want to add the middle value and color, first check the Diverging, then you can set the Middle value and color. Click on Ok.
Now we will convert Stacked column chart to area chart.
- From the visualization select the power bi Area chart
- You can see the Power bi area chart with conditional formatting in the below screen-shot.

Power bi area chart secondary axis
Here we will see How to create power bi area chart secondary axis using the above sample data.
- In the power bi report, select the area chart from the visualization.
- Then drag-drop order date(month) sales and profit from the field pane to Axis,value and secondary value respectively.
- Now in the Format section, under visualization, you can turn on the secondary axis after adding the secondary values.
- In the secondary axis section, you can change the start value, end value, color, text size, font family, display units, and title of the secondary axis of the power bi area chart.

Power bi area chart secondary values
Here we will see how to create Power bi area chart secondary values by using the above sample data.
- In the power bi report, select the area chart from the visualization.
- Then drag-drop order date(month) sales and profit from the field pane to Axis, value, and secondary value respectively. Make sure you have not added an argument to the legend while adding secondary values because power bi visuals don’t support both the multiple values and legend.
Now you can see the secondary values in the y-axis of the Power bi area chart.
Power bi area chart color
Here we will see How to change Power bi area chart color using the above sample data.
- Select area chart from the visualization in the power bi report.
- Then drag-drop order date(month) and profit from the field pane to Axis and value respectively.
- In the format section, go to data colors-> under field(Profit), select a color you want.

Power bi area chart sort order
Here we will see how to create Power bi area chart order using the above sample data.
- In the power bi report, select the area chart from the visualization.
- Then drag-drop order date(month) and sales from the field pane to Axis and value respectively.
- In the canvas of power bi, Click on the More icon on the top of the visuals.
- Here you can sort the order of visuals in 3 ways to sort visuals i.e sort ascending, sort descending, and sort by. The sort by features in power bi is used to sort the visuals according to field
- If I have selected the sort ascending and then select Sort by->Sales, then the sales data in visuals show from lowest to highest.
- Accordingly, you can sort the sales value as descending.
- In the below Screen-shot, you can see the Power bi area chart sort order (descending).
Power bi area chart trend line
Here we will see the How to add power bi area chart trend line using the above sample data.
- In the Power bi blank report, select the area chart from the visualization.
- Then drag-drop order date(year and month) and profit from the field pane to Axis and value respectively.
- Now, if you want to add the power bi trend line from the analytics, it will not appear in the default setting.
- To get trend line, go to the format section under visualization pane, Select X-axis->Type-> continuous.
- Now go to the Analytics section under visualization, you can see the trend line, Click on it.
- Click on Add icon. Then give a name to the trend line. And also you can change the color and style of the trend line and you can set the transparency of the trend line.

Power bi area chart percentage
Here we will see how to create power bi area chart percentage using the above sample data.
- In the Power bi blank report, select the area chart from the visualization.
- Then drag-drop order date(month) and profit from the field pane to Axis and value respectively.
- In the value section, click on the drop-down->Show value as->percentage of grand total.
- In the below screen-shot, you can see Power bi area chart percentage.
Power bi area chart drill down
Here we will see how to set the Power bi area chart drill down using the above sample data.
- In the power bi report, select the power bi area chart from the visualization
- Then drag-drop order date(year and month) and profit from the field pane to Axis and value respectively.
- In the canvas area, top of the visuals, select the fork icon then it will expand all down one level of hierarchy. Make sure that your visuals have a hierarchy, then only you can use the drill feature.
- After drill down, it takes one level down in the hierarchy (Order date), it goes drill down from year-> month year. In the below screen-shot, you can see the Power bi area chart drill down by using the fork icon
- If you want to see the only months in the visual after drill down, then select the double down arrow, on the top of the visual.
