What is the Power BI Bar chart
The horizontal bar chart in Power BI, also known as the bar chart, is useful for comparing data across different categories.
In a bar chart, the main components include:
- Title: Provides information about the chart.
- X-axis: Displays individual entries for the categories being presented.
- Legend: Represents different categories contributing to the chart.
- Y-axis: Displays the values corresponding to each category.
- Bars: The heights of these bars collectively represent the total value of all the categories represented in the legend.
For example, it can be used to compare customer satisfaction ratings by department, revenue by product category, or website traffic by referral source.
Types of Power BI Bar chart
There are 3 different types of bar charts in Power BI. These are:
- Stacked bar chart: A stacked bar chart is a type of chart where multiple data series are stacked on top of each other within each category.
- Clustered bar chart: A clustered bar chart is a type of horizontal chart where multiple bars are grouped into clusters. These bars share the same y-values and are presented side by side, allowing for easy comparison between different categories.
- 100% stacked bar chart: The Power BI 100% stacked bar chart is utilized to exhibit the relative percentages of multiple data series within stacked bars, ensuring that the total of each stacked bar always equals 100%. This chart is valuable for comparing the proportional contributions of subcategories within each category, highlighting the cumulative impact of the entire category.

How to create a Power BI Bar chart
Here, we will see how to create bar charts in Power BI Desktop.
As Power BI provides 3 types of charts i.e. Stacked bar chart, Clustered bar chart, and 100% stacked bar chart.
We will see how to create each of them by using the Financial sample data sheet.
Stacked bar chart
For example, we will create a Stacked bar chart that will show the sales based on Segment. For this, follow the below steps:
- Open Power BI Desktop, and click on the Excel workbook in the Power BI ribbon.

Then select the Excel sheet from your local system; in the Navigator window, select the table and click the Load button.

- Select the Stacked bar chart from the visualization pane. A blank stacked bar chart is added to Canvas in Power BI.
- Then, drag and drop the Sales, Profit, and Segment to the X-axis and Y-axis, respectively, in Power BI Desktop.
- Now you can see the Stacked bar chart displays the Sum of sales based on Segment.

Clustered bar chart
In this case, we will display the i.e. Sales and Profit based on Segment, but in the Clustered bar chart in Power BI Desktop.
- In Power BI Desktop, select the Clustered bar char from the visualization pane.
- Then, drag and drop the Sales, Profit, and Segment to the X-axis and Y-axis, respectively, in Power BI Desktop.
- Now you can see the Clustered bar chart displaying the Sum of sales and the sum of profit by Segment.

100% Stacked bar chart
Here we will create a 100% stacked bar chart, that will display the Sales and Profit based on Segment in Power BI.
- To create a Clustered bar chart, from the visualization pane, select the Clustered bar chart.
- Then, drag and drop the Sales, Profit, and Segment to the X-axis and Y-axis, respectively, in Power BI Desktop.
- Now you can see the 100% Stacked bar chart displaying the Sum of sales and the sum of profit by Segment.

Power BI increases bar width
Here, we will see how to increase the bar width of the Power BI bar chart.
To increase the bar width of the above Stacked bar chart in Power BI Desktop, follow the below steps:
- Select the stacked bar chart in Power BI Desktop and click on the format pane.
- Expand the Bars section; here, you can see 3 categories: Color, Border, and Layout.

- Expand the Layout, by increasing and decreasing the Space between Categories we can increase or decrease the width of the bar chart in Power BI Desktop.

This is how to increase the bar width of the Power BI bar chart.
