What is Power bi treemap?
- Power bi treemap display hierarchical data as a set of nested rectangle.
- In power bi treemap each level of the hierarchy is represented by color rectangle known as branch, containing smaller rectangle known as leaves.
- In treemap power bi bases the size of the space inside each rectangle on the measured value.
- The rectangle in treemap are arranged in size from top left (largest) to bottom right (smallest).
When to use power bi treemap
Here we will see when to use power bi treemap.
The power bi treemap is a perfect choice:
- When to display large amount of hierarchichal data.
- When bar chart cannot handle the large number of values.
- When to show the pattern of the distribution of the measure across each level of categories in the hierarchy.
- When to show the proportion of each part and whole.
- When to attributes using color coding and size.
- When to spot patterns, most important contributers, outliers and exceptions.

Power bi treemap vs pie chart
Here we will see power bi treemap vs pie chart in power bi desktop.
Treemap | Pie chart |
---|---|
Power bi treemap represented as rectangular | Power bi pie chart represented as circular |
Each measure is represented as rectangular in the treemap | In the pie chart the circular is divided into a wedge, the larger the wedge the bigger is the measure. |
Like the wedges in the power bi pie chart, the rectangles vary according to the size of the measure they represent. | Each wedge represent a portion of the data |
The rectangle in the power bi treemap offers enough space for labeling, the color can be used to signify something else. | The sector/wedges can be color-coded to include another measure. |
In treemap, the rectangle can show different levels of data. It is possible to divide the measure into subcategories. | The pie chart can only show one level of data. And it is impossible to divide the wedge of each measure into subcategories. |
