Power BI Pie Chart Drill Down

Do you want to know about the Power BI pie chart drill down feature?

In this Power BI tutorial, we will see how to use drill down feature in the Power BI pie chart. Recently, while creating a report, I needed to display sales based on product, sales based on segment, and sales based on both product and segment in a single pie chart.

For this, I utilized the drill-down feature, which is an effective method for presenting hierarchical data with multiple levels of detail in a Power BI report.

Let’s see how to apply the drill-down feature to the Power BI Pie chart.

Apply drill down to a Power BI Pie chart

Here, we will see how to apply drill down to the Power BI Pie chart.

There are two ways we can use the drill down feature in the Power BI Pie chart

  1. Drill down one field at once
  2. Expand feature

Now, let’s see how to use this feature to display the data in a multilevel Pie chart.

For example, we will use the below financial Excel sheet to create a multilevel Power BI Pie chart.

1. Power BI pie chart drill down [One field at once]

Here, we will create a pie chart by adding “Segment” and “Country” to the legend. In the “Values” section, I have included the “Sales” field.

The pie chart will initially display the sum of sales based on the segment. Subsequently, we can drill down to view the sum of sales based on individual products.

To do this, follow the below steps:

  • Open Power BI Desktop, then click on Excel workbook. Select the file from your local system.

In the previous section, we saw how we can go to the next level of hierarchy in the Power BI Pie chart. That means if the default view is the Sum of sales by segment -> then we go to the next level by using drill down i.e. Sum of sales by Country.

In this section, we will see how to expand all down one level in the hierarchy in a Power BI pie chart. That means if the default view is the Sum of sales by segment -> then we will drill down to the Sum of sales by segment and country.

Now, let’s see how we can use the drill-down expanded feature in the Power BI Pie chart.

  • We will use the same pie chart, so click on the drill-up button, and it will go back to the default level.
