Do you want to know about the Power BI pie chart drill down feature?
In this Power BI tutorial, we will see how to use drill down feature in the Power BI pie chart. Recently, while creating a report, I needed to display sales based on product, sales based on segment, and sales based on both product and segment in a single pie chart.
For this, I utilized the drill-down feature, which is an effective method for presenting hierarchical data with multiple levels of detail in a Power BI report.
Let’s see how to apply the drill-down feature to the Power BI Pie chart.
Apply drill down to a Power BI Pie chart
Here, we will see how to apply drill down to the Power BI Pie chart.
There are two ways we can use the drill down feature in the Power BI Pie chart
- Drill down one field at once
- Expand feature
Now, let’s see how to use this feature to display the data in a multilevel Pie chart.
For example, we will use the below financial Excel sheet to create a multilevel Power BI Pie chart.

1. Power BI pie chart drill down [One field at once]
Here, we will create a pie chart by adding “Segment” and “Country” to the legend. In the “Values” section, I have included the “Sales” field.
The pie chart will initially display the sum of sales based on the segment. Subsequently, we can drill down to view the sum of sales based on individual products.
To do this, follow the below steps:
- Open Power BI Desktop, then click on Excel workbook. Select the file from your local system.

- Then, the navigator window will open; from here, select the table and click on the Load button.

- Select the Pie chart from the visualization pane to add the Pie chart to Power BI Canvas.

- Then drag and drop the Segment and Country columns to the Legend field and the Sales column to the Value field.
- Then you can see it display the Sales based on Segment.

- To show or drill down the sales based on Product, for this, turn on the drill-down feature. Click on the single down arrow button ↓. then the drill down mode is on like below.

- To drill down to the next level of hierarchy in the Power BI Pie chart, for this, click on the double arrow ↓↓, if there is no more level to go down, then it will grey out.
- Now you can see the Sales based on the Country in the Power BI Pie chart.

2. Power BI pie chart drill down [Expanded feature]
In the previous section, we saw how we can go to the next level of hierarchy in the Power BI Pie chart. That means if the default view is the Sum of sales by segment -> then we go to the next level by using drill down i.e. Sum of sales by Country.
In this section, we will see how to expand all down one level in the hierarchy in a Power BI pie chart. That means if the default view is the Sum of sales by segment -> then we will drill down to the Sum of sales by segment and country.
Now, let’s see how we can use the drill-down expanded feature in the Power BI Pie chart.
- We will use the same pie chart, so click on the drill-up button, and it will go back to the default level.

- To expand all down to one level of hierarchy, click on the expand-down icon.
- Now, you can see the Pie chart displays the sales based on Segment and Country.

This is how to apply the drill-down feature to the Power BI Pie chart.
Conclusion
In this Power BI tutorial, we saw how to implement the drill-down feature in a Power BI Pie chart in two different ways. These ways are:
- Drill down one field at once
- Expand feature
