Recently, one of our site members said, “I’m trying to share this event recording internally, but now it’s not possible anymore.” When they tried, they got the message “Sharing is limited on this item. You can only copy links for people who have existing access and you can’t invite anyone new.”

After checking the settings, I was able to solve the problem.
In this tutorial, I will explain why this error happens and show you step by step how to fix it in SharePoint and OneDrive.
Solved “Sharing is Limited on This Item” Error in SharePoint
The error usually happens because the site’s sharing settings are too restrictive. By default, some sites only allow sharing with people who already have access.
To fix this, update the Site Sharing settings:
- Open your SharePoint site.
- Click the gear icon (Settings) in the top-right corner.
- Select Site permissions.

- Under Site Sharing, click Change how members can share.

- In the Site sharing settings window, select any one:
- Site owners and members can share files, folders, and the site. People with Edit permissions can share files and folders.
- Site owners and members, and people with Edit permissions can share files and folders, but only site owners can share the site.
- Click, save.

Once you apply this setting, members with proper permissions can share files or folders without running into the “Sharing is limited on this item” error.
