In this SharePoint Online tutorial, we will discuss on SharePoint Image web part.

We will see, the SharePoint Image web part and how to add the Image web part to our SharePoint modern site page, and how to resize and crop the Image web part in SharePoint Online modern site.

The example we are doing here is based on a SharePoint Online environment, Some of the features described below may not be available in SharePoint Server 2019.

What is the SharePoint Image web part?

  • In the modern SharePoint site, Microsoft provides a lot of out-of-box web parts to work with modern site pages. One of the popular web parts is the Image web part.
  • This Image web part authorizes us to select an image from the images that are uploaded recently, from a web search, and from the present SharePoint site or link or OneDrive to OneDrive for Business or another SharePoint site, or to upload an image from your computer.
  • You can also select an image approved by your organization.

How to add Image web part in SharePoint online

Let us see how we can add the Image web part in modern SharePoint,

  • Open the SharePoint site page where you want to add Image web parts to the SharePoint modern site page.
  • If you’re not in edit mode already, choose Edit Page at the top right of the SharePoint site page.
  • Click + circled icon then add a new Section layout.
  • In the search box, enter Image to quickly find and select the Image web part.

You can add the image from various sources as shown below:

  1. Recent -> We can see the recently opened SharePoint documents, pages, or images listed which we can select and add to our Quick Links web part.
  2. Stock images -> We can also insert the Stock images to your SharePoint site page which are provided by Microsoft.
  3. Web search-> We can insert an image from the web search or bing search it on your SharePoint site page.
  4. One Drive -> You can get a link for a document or image that you have stored on OneDrive.
  5. Site -> We can get a link for a document, image, or page from a SharePoint Site.
  6. Upload ->We can upload a document, image, or page from a SharePoint Site.
  7. Site -> You can get a link for a document, image, or page from a SharePoint Site.
  8. From a link -> Provide a link for your SharePoint documents, pages, or images from saved OneDrive or from the SharePoint site.

In this example, I am going to choose an image from the Stock Images option and then select the Insert button.

Once you select one item, the image will be added to the Image web part looks as shown below.

  • Click the Edit web part on the left to change the image, add a link to the image, add text over the image, and add or change the alternative text. You can add a caption for the image as well.
  • Under Link, option Insert Link, so that when you click on the image it navigates to the mentioned URL.

  • We can add a caption for the image by editing the Image web part.
  • We can also add text over the image which is similar to the caption which appears on the top of the image. we can only add 48 characters to it.
  • We should turn on the toggle control if we want to display the text over the image.
  • It will also provide an option, where we can change the item link.
  •  SharePoint Server Subscription Edition and SharePoint Server 2019 only support alternative text when you’re editing the web part.
  • Once you edit the Image web part click on the Republish to commit your changes.

In the below screenshot you can see that I have added a caption for the Image as well as added text over the image.

Edit Modern SharePoint Image web part

Let us discuss how to edit, resize and crop an image in the modern SharePoint image web part.

  • Edit the SharePoint site page Click the Edit web part and Select the image.
  • Once you selected the image you can see the toolbar for editing images will be displayed.

  1. Resize

Let us see how to resize the image web part in SharePoint online.

  • Select the resize button on the SharePoint image web part toolbar and resize the image. we can also use handles to resize the image.
  • Using the handles we can make the image size which we want to be displayed.
  • Image resizing is not available in SharePoint Server 2019.

2. Crop with a free ratio

Let us see how can we manually crop the image web part in SharePoint online

  • Click the Crop with free ratio button to crop the image manually without using the aspect ratio.
  • Then drag one of the squares on each side of the image to make your image narrower, wider, taller, or shorter.
  • Click the Save button to commit changes.

3. Aspect ratios

Let us see how can we crop the image web part using Aspects in SharePoint online,

  • When we crop an image with the aspect ratio, that allows us to decide the proportion of the width and height of your image.
  • By default, the aspect ratio allows us to crop the image with a ratio of 16/9 or we can crop to a 3/2 ratio or crop to a 4/3 ratio, and also we can crop to a 1/1 aspect ratio.
  • We can also rotate the aspect ratio crop box.

4. Alignment

Let us see how can we align the image in the modern SharePoint image web part,

  • Alignment is used to display the image how it should be placed on the SharePoint site page. 
  • In the modern SharePoint image web part, when you select the alignment button, it shows three options that are Align left, Align center, and Align Right.
  • When you select Align left option image will be displayed on the left side of the SharePoint page.
  • When you select Align center option, it displays the image at the center of the SharePoint page.
  • When you select Align right option image will be displayed on the right side of the SharePoint page.

5. Reset

Utilize the Reset control to, undo all the modifications that you’ve made. Once you select the reset button returns the image to the previous state.

6. Save

Use the Save button, to commit all of the changes you’ve made.

  • But the external links always open in a new tab in the Modern SharePoint Image web part.
  • The best way is for the user can use the browser behavior.
  • Right-click on the image and click on the Open link in a new tab as shown below:

Replace the existing image with a modern SharePoint Image web part

Let’s see how to replace the existing image in the Image web part in the SharePoint image web part,

There are two ways that we can replace the existing image, They are

  1. Copy and paste
  2. Drag and drop
  • yes, We can choose a different image by editing the SharePoint online image web part and replacing the old image with a new image.
  • To replace the existing image, we can easily drag or copy and paste the new image.
  • We can resize or re-crop the image as needed.

Copy and paste

  • Copy the image that you want to replace with an existing image.
  • Edit the Image Web part and select the image in the Image web part by double-clicking it.
  • Press CTRL+V on your keyboard

This is one way that we can replace the existing image.

Drag and drop

  • Edit the Image Web part and select the image in the Image web part by double-clicking it.
  • Drag and Drop the new image over the existing image in the SharePoint Online image web part.

This is another way to replace the existing image.
