Recently I got the workflow suspended state error while sending an email to a SharePoint group from SharePoint 2013 using SharePoint designer workflow. I was simply trying to send an email to a SharePoint group in which there were few people presented in that group.
The full error message I was getting as:

To resolve this issue “An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the workflow instance“, please follow the below steps:
Open the SharePoint site, Click on the Settings icon form the top corner and then click on Site settings.
Then in the Site Settings page, click on Site permissions from the Users and Permissions section.
Then click on the particular SharePoint group to which you want to send the email.
Then click on Settings -> Group Settings as shown in the fig below:
In the Change group settings page, go to the Group Settings section and select the radio button Who can view the membership of the group? to “Everyone” as shown in the fig below:
Now it should send an email to the SharePoint group.
