SharePoint 2016 Upgrade Approach Ignite Update

Well, this is an update from Microsoft’s Senior Technical Product Manager Bill Baer in Ignite conference.

SharePoint Server 2016 upgrade path from the previous version is the database upgrade approach which was also there in SharePoint 2013. The upgrade is possible from SharePoint Server 2013. So if you want to upgrade to SharePoint 2016 from SharePoint 2010 then you have to upgrade the 2010 databases to 2013 before upgrading to 2016. So there will not be a direct upgrade from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint Server 2016.

The upgrade method in SharePoint server 2016 is the database-attach method. So first create and configure a SharePoint Server 2016 farm. Then you copy the content and service application databases from the SharePoint Server 2013 farm, and then attach and upgrade the databases. This upgrades the data to the new version.

It is important to remember that if you have any site collection provisioned in backward compatible SharePoint 2010 (14) mode, must be upgraded to 2013 prior to upgrading to SharePoint Server 2016.
