In this post we will discuss how we can export and import web parts in SharePoint 2013 Online. When you export a web part, the web part description file will be a .webpart file. A site owner can export a web part file and can upload to a web part gallery and other users can use the web part by importing into the web part page.
Remember we can not export any list view web parts. Web parts which can be exported are: Content Editor Web Part, Script Editor Web Part, Form Web Part, Page Viewer Web Part, XML Web Part, and Image Web Part etc. And you can able to only import to web part pages not to any other pages.
Export Web Part:
To export a web part first edit the web part page where your web part is there. Then in the edit mode click on Export… as shown in the fig below:
Then it will allow you to Save as a .webpart file. If you will Open the file in notepad file then you will see that is an xml file which will have all the web part properties, MetaData etc.
Import Web Part:
To import a web part to the web part Gallery, you can Open Web Part Gallery from Site Settings. Then in the Web Part Gallery page, click on Upload document and then browse to the file which we have exported in the above step.
Just give a Name, Title, description etc as shown in the fig below:
Now Open the web part page where you want to add the web part. Then edit the web part page and then Click on Add a Web Part.
Then in the web part categories, you will be able to see the web part under Miscellaneous section (if you have not selected any category while uploading to web part gallery).
You can select the web part and then click on Add. It will add the web part to the web part page. Hope it will be helpful to you.
