This SharePoint 2013 tutorial, we will discuss how to create a web application and site collection in SharePoint 2013. We will see how we can create a site collection and web application from SharePoint 2013 central administration.
We will also see, how to create a subsite in SharePoint 2013/2016 and classic SharePoint Online.
SharePoint 2016 Tutorial Contents
To create a web application in SharePoint 2013 follow below steps:
Navigate to SharePoint 2013 Central Administration and then click on the Application Management link. This will open the Application Management link as shown in the figure below:
Then click on the Manage web application link and this will open the Manage web applications page and that page you can click on the New button as shown in the figure below to create a web application.
The above step will open the dialog box to create a new web application. There you should not change anything (But you have the option to change) in the dialog box.
Here various options you need to check and also can change according to your requirements like whether you want to create a new IIS website or not, Name, port number. Virtual directory path (you should avoid changing this) etc.
In the Security Configuration section, you can select whether you want to allow anonymous access or not, Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Yes/No. etc.
In the Claims Authentication type, you can select Enable Windows Authentication is you want to enable Claims Authentication.
In the Sign in the Page URL section, you can select the Default Sign in Page and also the Public URL.
In the Application Pool section, You can choose a Create new application pool and give the name of the application pool.
In the Register new managed account section, you can give the Username and Password.
In the Database Name and Authentication section, you can choose the database server, the database name and the better to chose Windows authentication.
Now click on OK.
The web application got created in SharePoint 2013 from SharePoint 2013 central administration.
Now, we will see how to create a site collection in SharePoint 2013 from SharePoint 2013 central administration.
Follow the below steps to create a site collection in SharePoint 2013/2016.
First, open SharePoint 2013 Central Administration and click on Application Management. From the Application Management page click on Create site collection.
The above step will open the Create site collection page. On this page first, select the Web application.
Then give the Title and Description of the SharePoint site collection.
Next, in the Web site address section, Give the address for the site collection in SharePoint.
Next in the site template section, Here is a new thing introduced as Select experience versions like whether you want to see templates for the 2010 version or 2013 version.
Once you select the version you can select the template like you can navigate to the Collaboration section and can choose the Team Site template as shown in the figure below.
Also like in SharePoint 2010 you can select Primary site collection administrator, Secondary site collection Administrator, and Quota template, etc.
Then click on OK.
Once the site collection got created it will give a successful message.
Now, we will see how to create a subsite in SharePoint 2013/2016/Online. We can create a subsite using the browser in SharePoint 2013. The following procedure shows how to create a sub-site in SharePoint 2013.
Log into your SharePoint 2013 site and click on the “Settings” icon and choose “Site Contents” from the drop-down menu.
At the bottom of the page, click on “new subsite” under the “Subsites” header.
Enter the “Title” and “Description” of your new subsite, choose the URL for it and select a template for this subsite.
Select the necessary permission and navigation settings and click “Create.”
Now you can see your newly created SharePoint subsite.
Now, we will see how to create a blog site in SharePoint 2013/2016 inside a SharePoint site.
Open your SharePoint site, then click on site contents. Now click on “new subsite”.
Now provide the Title, description and site name. Then From the template selection choose “Blog”.
Set the permission as per your requirement. If you want permission as the parent site then choose the 1st radio button else if you want unique permission then check the 2nd radio button.
Now click on create and your blog site will be ready to use.
This is how we can create a blog site in SharePoint.
Now, let us see, how to create a root level site in SharePoint 2013/2016. Root level site is very much necessary if you are working with InfoPath with SharePoint.
Root level site collection URL is very much necessary if you are trying to deploy an InfoPath to a SharePoint server. If you will not have root site collection then you will get this error.
Open SharePoint 2013 Central Administration and then from Application Management click on Create site collections.
Now give a Title and Description. And then from the URL do not choose anything in the URL. It should be only a “/”. You should not choose the sites one.
Then chose the Template and then give the administrator like below and click on OK.
Now your root level site is ready. This is how you can create a root level site collection in SharePoint 2013/2016.
Now, we will see how to create a site using SharePoint Designer 2010 in SharePoint 2010.
There are two approaches we can create a SharePoint 2010 site using SharePoint designer 2010.
To start you create a site collection using SharePoint 2010 designer click on Start -> All Programs -> SharePoint -> Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010. This will open your SharePoint Designer 2010.
Then from the home page Look for the New SharePoint Site section and click on Team Site from the Site Template list as shown in the figure below.
This will open the Team Site dialog box and there give the location of the new website and click on OK as shown in the figure below.
If you want to create a subsite to an existing site then open the Site collection in SharePoint Designer 2010 and then navigate to the Subsites section in the right-hand side and click on New… as shown in the figure below.
Then this will open your New dialog box, where you can use the particular template for which type you want to make the web site like you have to choose from the out of box template like team site, blank site, blog, etc.
Then you need to Specify the location of the new website in the text box and click on OK as shown in the figure.
This will create the Site and after that, you can see the site in the browser with that particular address.
Here to remember one thing after you create the site or subsite, SharePoint designer 2010 will name the site as the name of the template like here it will name it as Team Site. To change the name, from the Home page in the SharePoint designer, from the Site Information section click on the Title and Description and change according to your need as shown in the figure below.
