SharePoint 2016 Tutorial Contents
Content type HUB is a central location where you can publish and manage content types across Web Application in SharePoint 2013/2016. As mentioned in definition it has to be configured in Central Administration. Microsoft has introduced this from SharePoint 2010 onwards.
Create a new web application with the name “Content Hub” also create a root level site collection in SharePoint 2013.
The site collection looks like below:
Activate Content Type Syndication Hub feature as part of Site collection features in the root site collection of Content type HUB web application. By activating this feature we are provisioning a site to be Enterprise Metadata hub site. To activate it go to the site settings page and then open Site collection features.
To configure Content type hub one of the prerequisites is Managed Meta Data Service. Please refer my article to configure and consume MMS in SharePoint 2013.
Since that, I have MMS already configured in my FARM all I need to do is I need to associate the service with content hub site collection
Ensure that Managed Metadata Web Service is started in WFE.
Central Administration -> Application Management -> Service Applications -> Services on Server.
Navigate to service applications on servers and select MMS service. From SharePoint Central Administration -> Application Management -> Service Applications -> Manage Service Applications.
As shown in the above article click on properties for MMS service to update Content HUB site collection URL
Enter the root site collection HUB URL as part of the content type hub text box.
Ensure that “consume content type from the content type gallery” is enabled as part of Managed Metadata Service Connection.
Select the MMS service Connection and click on properties option as part of ribbon control.
Click on the checkbox for “consume content type from the content type gallery” option and click ok on the popup window.
With this, we have successfully configured the Content type HUB in SharePoint 2013.
Now, we will discuss how to create and publish a new content type using content type HUB across FARM.
We saw how to configure the content type HUB in SharePoint. Now we will discuss how to create a content type and publish it through the Content type HUB in SharePoint.
Create and Publish Content type to Content Type Hub
Follow the below steps to achieve it:
Create a content type (follow the below article) in a newly created site collection in content HUB web application
As advised in the above 2 articles I have created a content type “Loan Details”
Now click on “Manage Publishing for this content type” option (as shown below)
This will take you to the next page where it will allow you to publish at the enterprise level.
As highlighted in the above screen select “publish” radio button and click on “OK”
This will publish the content type as part of the Content type HUB.
Once it is published it will be available immediately to consume in other web applications. In SharePoint, we have a timer job to make it available to subscribers. To enable this immediately we have to run the timer job explicitly from Central Administrator
Click on “Review Job definitions” as part of Monitoring.
Now identify “Content Type Hub” job definition and click on that.
That will take you to the “Edit Timer Job” page, click on “Run Now”.
Verify the timer job status in Central Admin.
Now log on back to the Site collection where you have created the “Content Type” and navigate to “Content Type Publishing” link.
Check the Refresh all Published Content types on next update and say OK.
To verify the availability of this content type as default create a new site collection in the same or different web application.
