This SharePoint 2013 tutorial explains what is content type hub in SharePoint. We will see how to work with a content type hub in SharePoint 2013/2016.
Content Type Hub in SharePoint 2013
Content types are a very useful component in SharePoint. Microsoft provides a centralized location to create, manage & publish content types known as content type hub.
This is nothing but a site collection to create site columns and content types. We can use those content types through Managed Metadata Service Application across other site collections and SharePoint farm.
For this particular demo, we will create a different web application and within that, we will create our site collection for the content type hub. To create a web application, Open SharePoint 2013 central administration.
Then click on Manage web applications under Application Management. Here click on the New button from the ribbon to create a new application. Give a web application name as well as other details required to create a web application. The form will look like below:
Once the web application created successfully, we will create a site collection. Then click on Create site collection which is under Application Management.
Give a title for the site collection and URL for the site collection. You can use any template for the site collection. Here I have chosen a Team Site template like below:
Once the site collection created successfully. Open the site collection and then click on the gear icon to open the site settings page.
Then click on Site collection features a link which is under “Site Collection Administration”. Then in the Site collection feature, Activate “Content Type Syndication Hub” feature as shown in the fig below:
Now we will create a content type in our content type hub site collection. Click on the gear icon then click on Settings to go to the Site Settings page. Then click on “Site content types” page to open the “Site Content Types” page.
Here click on the Create button to create a test content type. Give a name for the content type, choose a parent content type and then select a group name as shown in the fig below:
Then we have to do some configuration settings for the Managed metadata service. Go back to SharePoint central administration, click on Manage service applications which are under Service Applications under Application Management.
Here two things are there:
- Managed Metadata Service
- Managed Metadata Service Connection
First, click on Managed Metadata Service and then from Ribbon click on Properties. In the Create New Managed Metadata Service dialog box, in the Content Type hub give our Content Type Hub site collection URL like below:
Then click on OK.
Then click on “Managed Metadata Service Connection” and click on Properties in the Ribbon. This will open the “Edit Managed Metadata Service Connection” dialog box. Here check the checkbox “Consumes content types from Content Type Gallery at….” Click on OK.
Now go back to the Content Type Hub site collection. And open the Content-type which we have created earlier. In the content type click on “Manage to publish for this content type as shown in the fig below:
Here choose the Publish radio button as shown in the fig below: Then click on OK.
The content type may not be immediately available in other site collections. It depends on two timer jobs. Go to SharePoint 2013 central administration. Click on Monitoring. Then click on Review job definitions which are under Timer Jobs. There you should be able to see two timer jobs as:
- Content Type Hub
- Content Type Subscriber
Click on the Timer job and click on the Run Now button to run the timer job now. Give a few minute gaps between the two timer jobs.
Now open any other site collections and then go to the Site Settings page. Then click on “Content type publishing” which is under “Site Collection Administration”.
You will be able to see the content type which we have created in the Content Type Hub site collection like below:
Apart from this also you can visit the Site Content types page you will be able to see the Content-type there.
