This SharePoint tutorial explains, how to configure the search service application in SharePoint 2013/2016. To configure search service application make sure you have created a managed account that you can use while configuring search service application.
If you have not created the managed account follow the below steps to create a managed account.
Configure search service application in SharePoint 2013/2016
First, open SharePoint 2013 central administration and then click on the Security link. This will open the Security page.
From General Security, click on Configure managed accounts. Then in the Managed Accounts page click on Register Managed Account. Then in the Register Managed Account page, give username and password. If you want to set Automatic Password Change, then you can check the “Enable automatic password change” checkbox.
Now Open SharePoint 2013 central administration. Click on “Manage service applications” which is under “Application Management”. Then in the “Manage Service Applications” page, From Ribbon click on New -> Search Service Application as shown in the fig below:
Then in the Create New Search Service Application Page, give a name for the Search service application. And give a Search service account as shown in the fig below: Make sure the account is a managed account.
Give an Application Pool for the Search Admin web service, either you can select an existing application pool or you can create a new application pool.
Then give an application pool for a search query and site settings web service. Here also either you can create a new application pool or choose an existing application pool. It is better to create a new application pool and use that one.
Then click on OK, it will show the progress like below:
And once complete, it will display a successful message that the search service application has been created successfully.
Now if you see the Manage Service Applications page you will see the Search Service Application status will show as Started. And if you will click on the search service application you will be able to see search administration details like below:
