This SharePoint tutorial explains, how to change the site collection look and feel in SharePoint Online or SharePoint 2013/2016/2019.
Microsoft provides a few out-of-box themes that we can use to change the look and feel of a SharePoint site.
SharePoint Look and Feel
Let us see, how to change the look and feel of a modern SharePoint site.
To change the look of your SharePoint modern site follow the below steps:
- In the top right corner of your SharePoint modern site, Select the setting gear Icon.
- Under Settings, click on the change the look option.
On the SharePoint modern page, Under Change the look option there are four sub-options available they are,
- Theme -> We can use theme option to change the colors of the Sharepoint modern page site.
- Header -> To customize your SharePoint site header in sharepoint modern page.
- Navigation -> To change your navigation in sharepoint modern page.
- Footer -> To add a sharepoint modern page site footer.
Use a theme to change colors of SharePoint modern site
To change the colors of your SharePoint modern site, follow the below steps:
- On your SharePoint modern page site, click settings -> Change the look -> Theme.
- Select the theme you want, click Save to apply it to your SharePoint site or, if you don’t like what you see and want to revert back to what you had in the beginning, click Cancel instead.
Customize your SharePoint modern page site header
To customize your SharePoint modern page site header, follow the below steps:
- On your SharePoint modern page site, click settings -> Change the look -> Header. Under Header option there are three sub-options available they are,
- Layout
- Background
- Display
Layout section in SharePoint site header
- Choose a layout.Compact layout is the default for all the SharePoint modern sites.
- There are four different layout options available in SharePoint modern page site header, such that,
- Minimal layout
- Compact layout
- Standard layout
- Extended layout
Minimal Layout SharePoint modern page site header
The minimal layout reduces height with all the content in a single line including a small site logo, site title, site navigation, and site actions and labels on the SharePoint modern page site header.
Compact layout SharePoint modern page site header
The compact layout is the default layout for SharePoint modern sites. It keeps the contents on a single line with a larger height layout that uses the full-size of the SharePoint site logo.
Standard layout SharePoint modern page site header
The standard layout is the layout with the full-size site logo and keeps the contents split into two lines.
Extended layout SharePoint modern page site header
The extended layout is the largest layout and keeps the contents split into two content areas with a site logo, site title, and also has an optional background image option.
Background section in SharePoint site header
In the Background section, select a theme color to change the background color of your site header. Select Extended header to add the background image and we can select the focal point for the image
Display section in SharePoint site header
In the Display section,
- you can select the Toggle to set the visibility of your Sharepoint modern page site title.
- Select Change option to add a site logo thumbnail for your SharePoint modern page site.
- Select Change to add a site logo.
- If using Extended layout, select Site logo alignment.
Click on the Save button to commit your changes.
Change your navigation style on a SharePoint modern page
To change your navigation style on the SharePoint modern page site, follow the below steps:
- On your SharePoint modern page site, click settings -> Change the look -> Navigation.
- Select the site navigation visibility toggle control.If the site navigation visibility toggle control is enable youu can able to see the Navigation in your SharePoint site, else it doesn’t appear.
- Select Menu style option as either Mega menu or Cascading
- Click Save to apply it to your SharePoint site or, if you don’t like what you see and want to revert back to what you had in the beginning, click Cancel instead.
Add a SharePoint modern page site footer
To add a SharePoint modern page site footer, follow the below steps:
- On your SharePoint modern page site, click settings -> Change the look -> Footer.
- To add a footer to your SharePoint modern page site enable the Toggle the Footer visibility switch to On.
- Choose a Layout either as a simple layout which displays one level of links and labels or an Extended layout which displays two level of links and labels.
- Select Upload to add your logo image to the footer and the image will be automatically resized.
- Enter a Display name to add a name for your SharePoint modern page site footer.
- Select a background color.
- click Save to apply it to your SharePoint site or, if you don’t like what you see and want to revert back to what you had in the beginning, click Cancel instead.

Change look and feel of SharePoint site (Classic site)
Step 1: Log in to your SharePoint site -> Go to the Settings gear icon on the right side of the page -> Click on Site settings.
Step 2: Click on change the look under look and feel on the site settings page.
Step 3: Once you click on Change the look, you will redirect to the gallery section where you can find different types of out-of-box templates in SharePoint.
Step 4: Next if you want to keep any different template then click on the template to check the look and feel of that template. You can try it out here to check the compatibility of your current site collection.
Step 5: If you want to continue with this design then set this as default so that you can able to see the new design in your site collection.
