Recently while opening the SharePoint 2013 site in the browser I got the error which says “500 INTERNAL SERVER ERROR”. It shows like below:
When I checked in the IIS manager SecurityTokenServiceApplicationPool has been stopped which shows like below:
The reason behind this is that the password for the account which is used to start the application pool has been expired. To change this Select the application pool and then click on Advanced Settings. In the Advanced Settings, go to the Identity section and then click on the … which will open the Application Pool Identity. Then you can set the password for the account as shown in the fig below:
Now Start the Application Pool (the Status should be Started now) and the site will open.
