In this post we will discuss how to save site as a template in SharePoint 2013. SharePoint 2013 has default templates like Team site, Project site, communities sites etc. Apart from default templates we can also save our own customized site as a template.

Whenever you will save site as a template, the objects which will be saved are Lists, libraries, external lists, data source connections, list views and data views, custom forms, workflows, content types, custom actions, navigation, site pages, master pages, modules, and web templates.
But the objects which are not supported are Customized permissions, running workflow instances, list item version history, workflow tasks associated with running workflows, people or group field values, taxonomy field values, publishing pages and publishing sites, My Sites, and stapled features.
Whenever you will save site as a template, then it will be saved to the solution gallery. Whenever you will save this will be save as a .wsp file.
Steps to Save site as a template:
- Open the site collection, then click on the Settings icon in the right hand side. This will open the Site Settings page. From the Site Actions section, click on Save site as template.
- This will open the Save as Template page. Give the File Name, Template name, Template description and if you want to include the content then select the check box "Include Content". Then click on OK. See fig below:
Once the operation completed successfully, it will give the successfully message.
Then you can open the solution gallery (Settings -> then from the settings page click on Solutions from the Web Designer Galleries section). You will be able to see the solution as shown in the fig.
If you want to upload reuse and upload the solution, then you can open the solution Settings -> then from the settings page click on Solutions from the Web Designer Galleries section. Then click on New -> Upload Solution and then upload the solution as shown in the fig below:
This way you can use Save as Site Template option.
